That is one of the reasons why it is popular for military situations. When the military service members look at the flags, it is supposed to remind them of why they are serving. The people in the United States Military are there on their own will for the most part so it helps them remember why they are fighting.

Whenever there was a battle throughout history, there would always be some kind of a reminder, be it a flag or other memento, to help keep the moral of the soldiers up and keep them motivated. Our modern understanding of what the color guard is has its roots in that.
