Are leaf strainers (for gutters) or leaf guards (gutter covers?) useful/effective/good?
1-2 times a year my family calls in gutter cleaning. I was wondering if leaf strainers would be worth getting to not have to call in the gutter cleaners. Tell me if they worked for you or you know of someone who thought they were useful. Any info is useful :}
House info – I have a very weird shaped house and in a very wooded area so I get tons of leaves and sticks coming on the roof.

I had them and they worked pretty good keeping the leaves out, however, they provided shelter for wildlife to build nests. Ihad many bird nests and even gad a squirrel build a nest under them which caused other problems such as the gutters not drainng the water correctly. I ended up removing them.

We’ve been researching gutter guards/brushes/strainers too. There’s a site for the gutter brushes, which we had never heard of, but don’t know anyone who uses them. We’re waiting though because in the October Consumer Reports magazine, they wil have a review of different gutter systems. CR reviews are the best references for this kind of stuff. Good luck!

Some of them work quite well. It depends on the brand and the installation crew. You should check at your local home improvement store to find what’s available in your area. I’d recommend not using the ones that look like a piece of screen that just lays on top of the gutter. The ones made out of a solid sheet of metal, usually aluminum, and force the water and all the debris to flood out over the edge seem to work the best of all the ones I’ve seen.

If you don’t mind investing in a new system altogether, there’s one called Rainhandler that I had on my last house. It’s relatively expensive to buy but easy to install yourself if you don’t mind being on a ladder. It worked very well, just as advertised. If you’re paying for gutter cleaning twice a year, it could pay for itself in a few years easily. Screens are probably okay if all you have is leaves but I had spruce needles which fell right through the screens and clogged up as per usual.
